                        Mindstorms comes with a couple of sorts of sensors, light and maybe temp.

                        When you see the price of these from Lego, your thoughts would first be, "you must be joking" then next "I wonder if i could make my own".

                        There was a movement in the nineties called "Homebrew" where Logo enthusiasts made their own sensors and actuators.

                        Google "Lego Homebrew" and there is a heap of legacy stuff around.
